Farallon Shows ISDN Application Technology At Apple Developer Conference
San Jose, CA-—May 8, 1990—-At the 1990 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference,
Farallon Computing, Inc. demonstrated integrated voice/data applications for
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), featuring a future version of
Farallon's Timbuktu/Remote™ software along with Farallon’s MediaTracks™
product. The current Timbuktu/Remote screen sharing and file transfer software
works over ISDN today for voice/data teleconferencing -- a user can conduct a
simultaneous voice and screen conference with a remote user over a single ISDN
telephone line.
At Apple Computer, Inc.'s ISDN introduction for developers, Farallon showed a
development version of Timbuktu/Remote specially modified to support Apple's
new ISDN NB Basic Rate Interface (BRI) card for ISDN. The demonstration
version of Timbuktu/Remote added voice call support to its existing dial-up
screen-sharing capability. Both voice and data telephone calls were initiated
from a single user interface and a single directory. The ISDN NB card allowed
both the voice and the data calls between two Macintosh computers to run over a
single ISDN telephone line. (Currently, the shipping version of
Timbuktu/Remote works over ISDN out of the box for data only, using special
ISDN phones available from AT&T, Northern Telecom and other vendors.)
Farallon showed two applications for integrated voice and data in their
demonstration:
Voice/Data Teleconferencing -- The first application was voice/data
teleconferencing. The demonstration version of Timbuktu/Remote was used to
establish a simultaneous voice and screen-sharing conference between two
Macintosh users. They were able to collaborate on a document on the screen
while simultaneously talking on the telephone. When they had finished they were
able to transfer the file directly from one machine to the other. A single
Timbuktu/Remote interface managed both connections, using a common directory.
Remote Automated Training --- The second application was a remote training
server featuring MediaTracks, Farallon's multimedia training product slated for
June 1990 release. MediaTracks allows Macintosh users to create training
"tapes" which combine recorded screen animation with sound, graphics and
control buttons. In the demonstration, Timbuktu/Remote was again used to
establish a simultaneous voice and data connection. A Macintosh user was able
to play MediaTracks tapes remotely, with both the screen information and the
sound coming over a single ISDN telephone line.
Availability
Version 1.01 of Timbuktu/Remote is available for $195. MediaTracks is scheduled
to ship in June for $295. No timing or pricing information is available for
the voice/data prototype of Timbuktu/Remote.
